Kinloch, a project of work by Shabez Jamal continued SHED Projects' support for artists pursuing their most experimental instincts.
The installation directly referenced Jamal's own familial history in the midwest as a native of St. Louis. Jamal abstracts home video footage taken their uncle at one of their choral church performances, reconfiguring the frames to appear as arched stained glass windows.
A spinning disco ball in a nearby red room refers to the queer nightclub, with Jamal attempting to highlight the similarities and distinctions between the sacred and profane spaces.
This show was done in collaboration with Sibyl Gallery, New Orleans LA.
