Cockleburs
9 × 10 × 9 inches

In this uncanny work, Travis Morehead assembles hundreds of cockleburs—a plant notorious for its cling and sting—into the familiar silhouette of a classic teddy bear. What should read as soft and comforting instead bristles with tension, each burr a tiny barb. The piece balances tenderness and danger, nostalgia and discomfort, evoking a childhood form whose surface repels touch. It’s a sculpture that asks: what do we carry forward from our past, and what clings to us uninvited?
